Hi, I'm Dan

Welcome to my website

I am a Fourth year Web Computing with Year in Industry undergraduate, seeking technology based graduate opportunity, in which I can utilise my technical ability and gain further experience. Working as a technical development engineer has fuelled a passion for web development and working with new technologies more broadly. I am an enthusiastic individual, who brings a practical, people-focused approach to my work.

Please use the tabs below to navigate through my educational history.

Between 2010-2012, I studied for a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT as Strode College, Somerset. Within this qualification, there was a core focus on software development, which fuelled the passion for web development and new technologies more broadly that I have today.

Qualification achieved: Triple Grade Distinction* - 360 UCAS points.

I joined the University of Kent in 2012 to begin studying for a BSc in Web Computing with a Year in Industry. The programme has taught me the fundamentals of computing, as well as providing me with the opportunity to specialise in particular areas of interest, including web development during my year in industry.

Year 1

  • Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming
  • Foundations of Computing I
  • Databases and the Web
  • Computer Systems
  • Foundations of Computing II
  • Human Computer Interaction
  • People and Computing
  • Further Object-Oriented Programming

Year 2

  • Software Engineering
  • Algorithms, Correctness and Efficiency
  • Operating Systems and Architecture
  • Database Systems
  • Interaction Design
  • Mobile Application Design

Year 4

  • E-Commerce and Business
  • Web Development
  • Group Project
  • Computing Law and Professional Responsibility
  • Internet of Things
  • Philosophy of Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence

My degree has not only developed my technical knowledge and capabilities, but has enabled me to build upon core skills such as project management, communication and prioritisation due to the group based work I have been involved in.

I opted to undertake an industrial placement year attached to my degree to gain real-life experience that I could use to inform my final year studies and transfer to graduate opportunities. I spent 12 months with Hireserve, a recruitment software company based in Basingstoke. I joined Hireserve in July 2014 as a technical development engineer.

Building customer websites allowed me to expand upon my ability to utilise HTML, CSS, jQuery and JavaScript confidently, whilst developing core software of the company increased my skill set through working with PL/SQL.

This year has taught me self-belief in my technical capabilities, an appreciation for the importance of teamwork and an environment that has sparked a curiosity to seek further opportunities in this industry.

Combining the learnings from my degree and practical experience gained during my industrial placement and work experience, I have become confident utilising a variety of skills, as highlighted below. Working with HTML, JavaScript and CSS has enabled me to integrate text, graphics and time-based elements to produce effective and sophisticated websites. Studying Software Engineering more broadly has given me the ability to deploy appropriate theory, practices and tools for the specification, design, implementation and evaluation of computer-based systems.
